Bali. Our home break.

Bali is the anchor of the Roya Surf ecosystem. It is where the company was founded, where our flagship partner property sits, where our coaching program runs every day, and where most of our members start their journey with us. The variety on a single island is unmatched: reef and beach, left and right, dry season and wet season, advanced and beginner, all within an hour of one another.

The breaks we love

Eight breaks our coaches return to again and again. Each one earns its place for a reason. The right combination on the right week depends on swell, wind, tide, and the surfer. That is what the coaching program is for.

Uluwatu

The cathedral. A long left-hand reef with five distinct sections that link up on the right swell. Best from head-high to triple overhead, dry season trade winds, mid to high tide depending on the section. Intermediate to advanced.

Padang Padang

The Balinese Pipeline. A short, hollow, mechanical left-hand barrel that breaks over shallow reef. Comes alive overhead and above on a south swell. Advanced only when it is on.

Bingin

Punchy left-hand reef break with a short, hollow inside section. Best at head-high on a mid tide. Intermediate to advanced. Crowded, but worth it for the wave shape.

Dreamland

Roya Dreamland's home break. A more forgiving beach and reef setup than the rest of the Bukit, with peaks that work for a range of skill levels. Walkable from the property.

Keramas

The east coast jewel. A right-hand reef break that fires when the rest of Bali goes flat in the wet season. Powerful, hollow, performance-oriented. November to March is its window.

Canggu

A cluster of beach and reef breaks (Echo Beach, Old Man's, Berawa) that suit beginners through to advanced. Best in the morning before the wind. The cultural heart of modern Bali surfing.

Balangan

A long left-hand reef just north of Dreamland. Less crowded than Uluwatu, slower to wall up, fun on a mid-size swell. A great warm-up day on the Bukit.

Medewi

A long left-hand point on the west coast. Mellow, cobblestone, perfect for longboards and improvers. A two-hour drive from the Bukit, but worth the road trip.

Seasons

The classic window for the Bukit Peninsula is April to October. Dry season trade winds blow offshore on the west-facing reefs, south swells light up Uluwatu, Padang, Bingin, and Dreamland, and the days are predictable enough to plan a coaching block around. June through September is the peak.

November to March is the wet season. The Bukit goes onshore, and the conversation shifts to the east coast. Keramas becomes the headline act, working on the same swells that shut the west down, with cleaner morning conditions and far fewer people. Wet-season Bali is a different trip, and for the right surfer, a better one.

Where you'll stay

Flagship partner property
Roya Dreamland

A boutique resort in Pecatu on the Bukit Peninsula, set above Dreamland Beach with walking access to the sand. Forty rooms, private pool villas, beach club, restaurant, spa, and a coaching base run by Roya Surf. Helicopter pad on site for Balicopter transfers. The default home for every Roya Surf member visiting Bali, unless your trip calls for something else.

Getting around

Roya Surf members get a private driver for the duration of their stay. The Bukit reefs are within twenty minutes of Roya Dreamland. Canggu is around an hour, traffic depending. Keramas is ninety minutes east. Medewi is two and a half hours west.

For days when the road is the obstacle, Balicopter, our sister helicopter operation, runs transfers to remote breaks and east coast day trips. A morning surf at Keramas with a 25-minute flight in is a different kind of week.

Food and living

Bali rewards the surfer who slows down between sessions. A long breakfast at the resort, a warung lunch on the way back from the beach, an afternoon coffee at one of the dozen serious cafes on the Bukit, a sunset dinner at Single Fin or a quieter table near Bingin, then early to bed for the dawn check. The food scene has matured into something that holds its own anywhere in Asia, and the rhythm of a surf trip in Bali is what brings people back as much as the waves do.
