Destination guide

The Mentawais. The gold standard.

Seventy islands. More than fifty serious breaks within a day's boat ride of one another. A season window so reliable that surfers plan their year around it. The Mentawai Islands are the most celebrated premium surf destination on earth, and they earned that reputation the hard way: by delivering, swell after swell, decade after decade.

The setup

The Mentawai chain sits roughly 150 kilometres off the west coast of Sumatra, separated from the mainland by the Mentawai Strait. The four main islands are Siberut, Sipora, North Pagai, and South Pagai. Most of the famous breaks are concentrated in the Playgrounds area off Sipora and around the southern tip of North Pagai.

Access starts in Padang on the Sumatran mainland. From there members reach the chain by speedboat (around three hours), by overnight ferry, or by charter flight to Rokot or Mentawai airport. Roya Surf coordinates the full journey and the choice of vessel based on your group, your dates, and the weather window.

The breaks

Eight of the breaks our guides build trips around. The list is longer than this. The right wave on the right day is what an experienced local guide is for.

Lances Right (HT's)

The signature wave of the chain. A right-hand reef break that walls up perfectly from takeoff to inside section, with a hollow second bowl that produces some of the most photographed barrels in surfing. Best from head-high to double overhead. Advanced.

Macaronis

A short, mechanical, ramp-like left that breaks on a shallow reef shelf. Considered by many the most fun left in the world. Works at every size from waist-high to overhead. Intermediate to advanced.

Rifles

A long, racing right-hand reef break that holds size and rewards speed. Sections link up on the right swell into rides of more than two hundred metres. Advanced.

Bankvaults

A heavy, hollow right that breaks on a shallow reef in the Playgrounds area. Short, intense, and often the cleanest barrel of the day when conditions align. Advanced.

Greenbush

A thick, slabby left that holds the biggest swells in the chain. Reserved for experienced surfers who want a serious wave. Best on overhead and above.

Kandui Left

A long, fast, hollow left in front of Kandui Resort. One of the most consistent waves in the Playgrounds area, working on a wide range of swell sizes and directions. Advanced.

Pitstops

A user-friendly right-hand reef in the Playgrounds, perfect for warming up or for the intermediate surfer in the group. Mellow takeoff, walls into a fun inside section. Intermediate.

Thunders

A powerful left-hand reef break with a hollow takeoff zone and a long wall. Less crowded than Macas or HT's and a favourite of guides who want a quieter session.

The seasons

The prime window is May to September, when consistent south-southwest swells march up from the Roaring Forties and the dry season delivers stable, offshore conditions. Late May and early June are the connoisseur's pick: the swells have arrived, the crowds have not, and the weather is settled.

July and August are peak crowd season. Every charter and every lodge runs at capacity. The waves are still firing, but the experience is busier. Roya Surf members get priority access to the boats and lodges we work with, which is the practical answer to the crowd problem in those months.

How you'll experience it

Two ways to surf the Mentawais. Roya Surf curates both, and the right answer depends on your group and your goals.

Land based
Lodges

Premium island lodges in the Kandui Villas tier and a small number of comparable properties on Sipora and North Pagai. Walking access to a home break, fast tenders to nearby setups, full board, and a stable base for the week. Best for surfers who want consistency and comfort.

Sea based
Charter yachts

Premium charter boats including Addiction, Bintang, and Ratu Motu. The yacht moves with the swell and the wind, which means you surf the right wave on the right day. Best for experienced surfers who want maximum optionality and the classic Mentawais boat trip experience.

Why you need a guide

The Mentawais reward local knowledge in a way few destinations do. Tide windows for each break are tight. The wind shifts between islands. A two-hour move can be the difference between a flat afternoon and the session of the trip. Every Roya Surf charter and every lodge stay includes an experienced local guide whose job is to read the day and put the group on the right wave. We do not run trips without one.
